Last week, we posted on the blog on having a little fun and answering some questions (any and all kinds) that you would want to know the answer to. You asked, and we responded. Check them out.
James Spader asked, "Which role did you prefer me in: Raymond Reddington in the Blacklist or Ultron in the Avengers?
Brooke: Steff, Pretty in Pink
Seth: When I saw Age of Ultron, I couldn't help but see Reddington when Ultron was being his bad self. To me, they are one and the same.
On average, how many words does Seth speak a day?
Brooke: Probably more than you'd expect.
Seth: Enough to get my point across.
Why did you decide to be campus missionaries?
Brooke: I knew in college that I wanted to minister to and serve college students but it wasn't until a year after I graduated that the idea of doing so on campus rather than through a local church gained more traction. I talked to someone about what working with Chi Alpha looked like and quickly discovered that my passions and vision lined up with what Chi Alpha had already been doing for decades.
Seth: For me, it was a question I had asked myself many times after a Chi Alpha campus missionary came to speak at my home church. I loved what they shared and thought it to be really cool and a lot of fun. I think God birthed something in me in that moment and allowed it to grow until I was ready to take the next step and actually commit to doing campus ministry. I kept coming back to the question, "What if?" What if I don't take this next step? What if I stick on the path I'm on? What if I actually decide to do it? I finally got tired of asking the "What ifs" and finally went all in on it. I'm so glad I did. I haven't looked back since.
How's married life?
Brooke: I never know how to answer this question. Good. Marrying Seth has been one of the best decisions I've ever made; spending the last year with him has been a joy. He's a great friend and teammate and I'm thrilled to spend each day with him.
Seth: This is PG-13, right? ;) Married life is great. We've learned a lot about each other: from weekly hour-ish car rides to VCU to hanging out on the couch at home and enjoying a day off, Brooke is super awesome and makes me look way better than I am. I'm pretty fortunate to have her.
What are your top 3 tv shows right now?
Brooke: Oh man. So many options. Probably The Walking Dead, The Blacklist, and Big Bang Theory. Honorable mentions to Turn, Halt and Catch Fire, and Longmire.
Seth: We are at that stage in marriage where we watch everything together still. I would agree with Brooke, but also add in Impractical Jokers.
What does a day in campus ministry look like?
Brooke: Any combination of the following: two or three, sometimes more, discipleship meetings with students (1-on-1's); meetings about upcoming events; staff meeting, emails; sermon preparation; shopping for events.
Seth: It varies from day to day and campus to campus. One of the things I value most and want to make sure I have plenty of time for are discipleship meetings. That's where the rubber meets the road.
If you weren't a campus missionary, what job would you want to do?
Brooke: Either teaching or counseling.
Seth: Hmm, this is a tough one. I would probably say acting or teaching.
What's your favorite discipleship tool?
Brooke: PROAPT. It's a bible study tool. Pray Read Observe Apply Pray Tell. It strips out the mystery of how to study scripture. I find students, even those who have grown up in church, don't feel like they know what to do when they are told to have a devotional life (read their Bible). This gives them a framework.
Seth: I think it depends on where a person is in their walk with God. If they are a seasoned Christian, I like to give them liberty to pick what we talk about. I've done things like reading through a book of the Bible or reading a practical book (such as how to pray) with guys I've met up with. If I'm meeting with a pretty new Christian, PROAPT is pretty boss. Like Brooke mentioned, it takes the mystery out and shows a person that they don't have to rely on the pastor Sunday mornings to get something out of the Bible.
What is the best book you've read recently?
Brooke: Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. It's about worthiness, living vulnerably, and combating shame. It's challenging and incredibly freeing.
Seth: Talk Like TED by Carmine Gallo has been really interesting. It breaks down 9 keys to delivering a TED-style talk. Very well worth the read if you are giving any type of speech in the future.
What actor/actress would you want to spend a day with?
Brooke: Wow. Umm...someone funny. I think that Chris Rock or Jennifer Lawrence would be a blast to hang out with. And we'd probably stumble into some really great and challenging conversations based on their interviews I've read.
Seth: Hmm, I think hanging out with Jimmy Fallon would be great. We would run around NY all day and meet up with his celeb pals and then go do the show. I would definitely be down to do "Real People, Fake Arms"
What song inspires you?
Brooke: In My City by Ellie Goulding. I've driven around praying and blaring that song a lot. Something about it makes me dream for God to move in the places that I live and in and through my own life.
Seth: This is a really tough one! Why'd you have to ask this? Though there are a lot of great songs out there that inspire me, I would have to say this one always inspires me to dream big.
Thanks for asking those questions! We enjoyed answering them!
